Apart, 2001
A bagatelle to start and/or end improvisation.

Babar, 1988
Actually I have to confess that this is a masterpiece. It consists of two melodies to be played separately or together. There is a bass line, a figure with a counter rythm and four "waltz" figures. Everything can be used as you like to build backgrounds during solos or whatever. Instrumentation is free, the only thing that is locked is the form with two chords going back and forth in a way inspired by the xylophone music of the Lo-Birifor people of Ghana. Recorded on the Chapter 7 cd Thums Up (Caprice CAP 21361) in 1988.

Bo-Gyil (Scorch), 2001
(Sibelius 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A pattern from the ghanaian bo-gyil 4 note xylophone scale. In five beat rhythm; the various phrases can be repeated until bliss is reached. On any instruments.

Chew Berries, 1989
A very simple fast blues in F. It has a twist that I try to explain in the score. Recorded by Berger Knutsson Spering on Live at Glenn Miller Café (Amigo AMCD 889, 2001).
Christians Gånglåt, 2005
(Scorch) - (Sibelius 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A really stupid little song to be repeated until you reach wherever you are headed.

Christians Gånglåt, 2005
(Scorch) - (Sibelius 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A really stupid little song to be repeated until you reach wherever you are headed.

Dagar, Djur (Days, Animals), 1983
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
This is a modal piece based on raag Shanmukhapriya with swedish lyrics by Torkel Rasmusson, but it can very well be played instrumentally. You might want to keep the mood of the raga by staying within the scale while improvising. The bass line helps to support the mood.
This piece has been recorded by Torkel Rasmusson on Dagar, Djur (Mistlur MLR-34, 1983),
by ENTELI (Phono Suecia PSCD77, 1994) and by Old School on ALL TIME HIGH (Amigo AMCD 885, 1999) but it can take one more version.

Djupet
(The Depth), 1989
Written for "The Tempest" with a swedish translation by Bengt Anderberg, this was sung by Ariel mourning her lost father. Malin Ek as Ariel, sung it. She also did it on my cd Tarang (Rub-A-Dub RUBCD 12, 1995) and Lena Willemark did it on Enteli Live (Amigo AMCD 738, 1997).

Edith, 1982
(Scorch) - (Sibelius 5) - (pdf) - (mid) - (text)
One of my first pieces and still a jumping favourite in 5/8. Has an optional swedish text. Recorded by Enteli Recorded by by ENTELI (Phono Suecia PSCD77, 1994) and byOld School on All Time High (Amigo AMCD 885, 1999).

Eight Eleven, 2004-6
A four bar bass line in 11/8 with a melody in anticipation of 9/11. I've added some more bars making this piece the missing link between seven eleven and nine eleven.

Eight Fortyfive, 1995
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Two very simple lines to set a mood. Here with strings, but any instruments goes.

Familjen Bra (The Family Good), 1997
Theme for free (but swinging!) jazz group. Recorded by Berger Knutsson Spering on our first cd (Amigo AMCD 880).

Fanfar, 2003
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A simple fanfare might come in handy.

February March, 2002
A march that can be played by various ensembles. It has been performed by a marching band, by sinfonietta and choruses as well as by an eight-piece jazz group. Here is a version for piano.

Flabby Dick, 1988
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A free and swinging theme. Reminder of the inevitable future of ageing presidents.

Fortare, (Faster),
(Scorch) - (Sib 5)
Start very very slowly, gradually increasing the tempo until after 15 minutes or so you find yourself playing faster than you are able to. Find your own melodic way thru these chords.

Funk You
(scorch) - (sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A funky bassline with a melody that could be whistled late at night on a rainy asphalt street.

Gahu

Traditional song from Penye (Ewe) in Ghana. Recorded by Old School onThums Up (Caprice CAP 21361) 1988

Gnoggh's Blues, 1980
A blues in traditional jazz style. To play it you don't need to know that it is actually based on a tihai in Karnatic style: Ta Di - Ta - Ta Di - Ta - Ta Di - Ta - Ta Di Gi Na Tum - Ta Di Gi Na Tum - Ta Di Gi Na Tum = 32 Aksharas. Recorded by Old School on All Time High (Amigo AMCD 885, 1999).

Gurlai Kora, 1998
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid) - text for background vocals in swedish
A simple ostinato and some melodic phrases will set you in a proper mood for improvising. Recorded by Old School on All Time High (Amigo AMCD 885, 1999). Två sopranos for the melodic lines and backing vocals.....for example.

Gurukul
(scorch) - (sib 5) - (pdf) - (pdf i Bb) - (mid)

A small and beautiful dream.

In A Balinese Bar
(scorch) - (sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Three intertwined lines to be played in tempo, double (twice), quadruple (four times), half or one fourth speed. Keep and intensify the mood. In any octaves on any instruments. I have given the indian saregams if you like to use them. There is also a swedish text for the third theme by Lina Nyberg, called Vintern Vänder. Jhala
, 2006
Piano piece inspired by the Jhala playing technique of Hindustani music.

Jhala, 2006
Maybe it can be played by a lot of saxes. Please try it and tell me about how it worked.

Jor, 1994
The sound of the DLS on my computer is quite awful, but follow the instructions in the score and it will be a calm, soft, secret and ritualistic piece of music for any two low instruments plus ditto percussion.

Kamelen (The Camel)
The perfect piece for a quite evening in the desert.

Laila, 2006
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Lullabye for my youngest grandchild

March Mellow
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Two marching bands meeting in a street corner.

Metapolka
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A metapolka is a polka about the nature of the polka. That doesn't naturally make it a very serious piece of music. Why not start it slowly and raise the tempo each chorus. That will reveal the true nature of the polka sooner or later.

Morfars Schottis
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
A schottis in 5/8 with lyrics by Mats Nörklit. Recorded by Old School on All Time High (Amigo AMCD 885, 1999).

Rubato phrases to improvise out of.

New Gyil, 1995
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Gyil means xylophone in northern Ghana and this piece is based on the scale of the ko-gyil (funeral xylophone) and the typical "paradiddle" harmony of that region (you figure what that means).

Om Natten, 1996
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
En nattlig stämning. Recorded by Berger Knutsson Spering on our first cd (Amigo AMCD 880).

Simon's Lullabye ,
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf)

Vesuvio
(Scorch) - (Sib 5) - (pdf) - (mid)
Something tangoish with a lot of pressure wishing to be let out.

Improvise with this melody, without the chords, with the chords or both.
